Sylvia Campos

Sylvia Campos – Current City Councilwoman and Candidate for District 2

How do you plan to ensure fair treatment and equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity?

We need to follow the law, and I plan to advocate by using the pulpit and making a statement when ever possible that everyone should be treated equally. I will also be conscientious as to who I appoint to a board when given the opportunity.

What is your position on the local government’s role in protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination?

I support the protection of all our citizens. We must follow the law and protect everyone from all kinds of discrimination. We must be the example.

How would you promote initiatives or policies that support diversity and inclusivity across Corpus Christi?

First, I would welcome and celebrate Pride Month publicly. We celebrate Black History, Hispanic Month, why not Pride Month? We need to make sure our libraries are protected with DEI language. We also need to be mindful as to who we appoint to our boards.

In addition, we would like to know your thoughts on the current situation with the Corpus Christi Public Library advisory board, which has proposed removing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles from the library’s collection development policy. Many residents are concerned about the potential impact this could have on ensuring our public libraries represent the diverse needs of our community.

I too am concerned about this movement from the extreme Christian Right.  Mexican, Indigenous history has been left out of history books.  We must fight for recognition to our contribution to society. It can be difficult for people that are just starting to come out to be accepted in society.  History has not been kind to the gay community. We need to stand up for each other.
