John Garcia – Candidate for City Council District 1

I am committed to ensuring fair treatment and equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, by advocating for stronger anti-discrimination policies in employment, housing, and public services. I support inclusive community programs and events that embrace diversity, and I will push for diversity and inclusion training for city employees to create a safe, welcoming environment. Engaging with the LGBTQ+ community will be a priority to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed in city policies, making Corpus Christi a more inclusive and equitable city for everyone.  

I believe the local government has a crucial role in protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination. It is essential for the city to enforce and strengthen anti-discrimination laws to ensure equal rights in areas such as employment, housing, and public services. Local government should also take a proactive approach by promoting inclusivity through education and diversity training, fostering a safe and respectful environment for all. Protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen is key to building a more inclusive and thriving community.

 I would promote diversity and inclusivity in Corpus Christi by advocating for strong anti-discrimination policies and ensuring fair treatment in employment, housing, and public services. By collaborating with local organizations, I’d help host cultural and family-friendly events that celebrate the city’s diversity. Additionally, I’d support diversity training for city employees and businesses while actively engaging with different community groups to understand and address their needs in policymaking. My goal is to make Corpus Christi a more welcoming and inclusive city for all.  

I believe that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles are crucial to ensuring public libraries represent the diverse needs of our community. Removing these principles from the Corpus Christi Public Library’s collection development policy risks limiting access to materials that reflect the experiences of marginalized groups. Libraries should be inclusive spaces that provide resources for all citizens, fostering understanding and diversity. I would advocate for maintaining DEI in library policies to ensure our public libraries remain welcoming and representative of all voices.
