Eric Cantu

Eric Cantu – Candidate for City Council District 3

How do you plan to ensure fair treatment and equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity?

I believe everyone in Corpus Christi deserves equal access to opportunities and fair treatment, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. I will work to ensure that city policies promote inclusivity, and I’ll advocate for stronger enforcement of anti-discrimination laws within city operations and services. Additionally, I will support city partnerships with local organizations to provide resources and education to create a more welcoming environment for all.

What is your position on the local government’s role in protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination?

Local government has a crucial role in ensuring that no one faces discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. I will support ordinances that explicitly protect LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination in employment, housing, and public services. It’s vital to create a safe and inclusive community where all individuals feel respected and have the opportunity to thrive without fear of prejudice.

How would you promote initiatives or policies that support diversity and inclusivity across Corpus Christi?

I will champion policies that continue to encourage diversity in city programs, and community activities. Promoting events that celebrate our city’s diverse cultures and supporting local businesses owned by marginalized groups are key steps I would take. I would also push for the creation of a diversity and inclusion advisory committee composed of our local civil rights organizations to the City Council to ensure that underrepresented voices are heard in decision-making processes.

Candidate position on the Library Board’s initiative to undermine the current DEI collection development policy.

I am deeply concerned about the developments of the library board and the library’s collection development policy. Public libraries serve as a cornerstone for learning and community engagement, and they should reflect the rich diversity of our city. Removing DEI principles could limit access to resources that represent the experiences and identities of all Corpus Christi residents. I believe it is vital that our libraries provide materials and programming that are inclusive and representative of all communities, ensuring everyone has equal access to information, education, and stories that reflect their lived experiences.

At the same time, it is vital that parents take responsibility for their child’s choices in the library, ensuring they access age-appropriate materials. It is not the responsibility of the library board to police content, but rather the responsibility of parents to guide their children and ensure responsible use of the library’s resources. I will oppose any effort that diminishes the inclusivity of our public institutions, while supporting a balanced approach that respects parental oversight without resorting to censorship.
